Whale Watching Adventures

The small local harbour is buzzing with activity during the spring & summer months. Local fishermen bring in abundances of fresh lobster and snow crab on a daily basis while 4 small whale watching companies offer incredible whale watching experiences by means of larger converted fishing vessels or speedy Zodiac boats. Pleasant Bay has been called the Whale Watching Capital of Nova Scotia and was recently acknowledged as one of the top whale watching destinations in North America by Reader's Digest Magazine. During the months of May through October, the waters below the Mid-Trail serve as a feeding and breeding habitat for virtually all types of whales including Pilot Whales, Minke Whales, Fin Backs, Humpbacks and even enormous Blue Whales on occasion! Whale Watching excursions are offered several times daily and are located within a short walk of the Mid-Trail. Eagles, seals, sharks and even sea turtles are often spotted on these trips as well. Whale Watching in Pleasant Bay is a big favorite among travelers of all types and must be experienced to appreciate.

Hiking & Exploring

With over 25 world class hiking trails close by including the incredible Skyline Trail and Fishing Cove trails, which lie in the heart of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, and the epic, off the beaten path treasure of Pollets Cove, the Mid-Trail is a great choice for hikers and campers who may need accommodations before or after their wilderness adventures. Some of these places are also accessible by Zodiac and can still be enjoyed by those who may be restricted by time constraints or fitness levels. Ask our Whale Watching friends for more info about these excursions. Shorter walks include the MacIntosh Brook and Lone Sheiling trails which feature a picturesque waterfall and a replica of a historicsettler's hut.

Gampo Abbey Buddhist Monastery

One of the most fascinating and overlooked things about Pleasant Bay is the Gampo Abbey, a western Buddhist Monastery in the Shambhala tradition. Established in 1984, the Gampo Abbey is home to devoted monks who have come from all over to live and practice Buddhism in one of the most naturally beautiful environments in the country. Guided tours are often available for those interested in learning more about the Buddhist way of life. An amazing "Stupa of Enlightenment" monument was also erected near the Abbey in 2001. It contains relics from a late spiritual leader and is a must see when traveling through the area.

Cycling & Motorcycling

The North, MacKenzie and French Mountains that surround Pleasant Bay offer a challenging yet rewarding cycling experience like no other and are conquered by over 1000 cyclists a year. They are also a premiere motorcycling destination for those looking to soak up the smooth curves and fantastic scenery that the Cape Breton Highlands are famous for. We welcome cyclists and riders of all types to come stay with us and experience some of the best motorcycle roads in Canada.

Golf

We are also located just 30 minutes from the award winning Le Portage Golf course in Cheticamp. Hit the links with some friends before making that incredible drive over the mountain to the Mid-Trail. Around here the drive to and from might just be the best part of the day.
